About Daniel D’Laine
I’m a technologist with over twenty five years experience in the computing industry including teaching, networking and server contract services, computer builds/repairs, tuition and coaching.
Qualifications include full MCSE (Windows Server 2000), Masters in computer science and numerous IT and teaching qualifications.
I’ve been on the internet since the eighties and I can remember when 286′s with 2mb of memory were the dogs dangly bits. I can remember Supercalc and Lotus 123, I remember my Amstrad PCW 8512 Green Screen with Lemmings on a three-inch floppy disk – fond memories! I can even remember Windows 1!
I can remember when 14.4k bps modems were the fastest thing since Sebastian Coe took the 1500 metres gold medal in the 1980 Olympics. Yes, I’ve witnessed a 4-bit image unfold before my very eyes – one line at a time!
More recently, I have become one of the growing number of internet marketers making a stand against the hype and misinformation that plagues internet marketing sales-copy and it’s associated products.
A little hype is acceptable and justified if the product does what it’s supposed to do but ‘3 clicks to $10,000 per week’ and ‘$44,283.26 in just 20 minutes a day guaranteed’ are just lies!
I began marketing online in 1993 and since then, I’ve had some great successes – and been wiped out three times! Nowadays, I have a number of niche sites and do occasional internet and website coaching. I’m a firm believer in good business practice and doing things right the first time.
I’m just a normal bloke, into computers and the internet. I protect my personal life to the extent that you rarely hear about my personal life online. Why? Because that’s my private life which is separate from my working life and the two should stay that way. When you go to buy a new Television from PC World do you want to know all about the salesman’s wife and kids and about his last holiday and what car he drives before you’ll buy the telly?
‘nough said!
I prefer simple English and I’m not one who uses hype or gimmicks and unlike many marketers, I never disclose any financial details about any of my sites (I never disclose my sites) – and I recommend the same to anyone who is serious about making money online.
I’m not a ‘hyped sales-copy’ kind of bloke so you’ll never hear that I spent ‘every last penny’ on the latest piece of software or bought every type of money making application to make online marketing work. Anyone that has done this has either more money than sense or no sense at all!
You’ll also never hear that I was broke and living on the streets, lost my job and was down to my last dollar living off state payouts – ‘til I hit the ‘big one’… because I never was – unlike just about every other online marketer seemingly (who also just happens to have the very system he made it big with to sell to you… that his 93 year old granny or 6 year old kid can earn money with!)
Many years ago I paid £3000 for a course and because I knew so little about the reality and the risks (difficult niches etc.) of online marketing and the attitude you must have to make it work, it took me over two years to recover the cost.
After the course finished, I was left feeling high and dry with no backup. Only now, many years later, do I realise that the course content was in fact very good and did in fact provide everything I needed to know about the practical side of marketing online. How to build websites (something I could already do), SEO and advertising, analytics, product creation and up-sells, etc.
But the knowledge I really needed, was not included in the course. What was that? How to apply what I had learnt after the tuition stopped! How to motivate myself and how to think ‘online’ thoughts!
This is one of the biggest stumbling blocks for most new starters and it takes determination and persistence to overcome it.
Even now, after fifteen years, I don’t claim to be an expert in sales websites and there are many others who make much more than me, but I know that the money I do earn will continue whether I switch on the computer or not and that’s where the beauty of online marketing lies for me – the freedom to clear-off for a week or two (or month or two) and not worry about money.
For me, it’s not just about the money (it is about the money) :0) but that’s not all. It is at first, but once you’ve started generating a passive income, the freedom it allows is worth much more.
There are many ‘shortcuts’ and ‘quick fix’ methods which you can try, which may or may not get you off to a good start. I know I’ve tried quite a few over the years and found that most didn’t work for me and some just got me banned by Google.
It’s easy enough to learn new ideas, but you need many years to figure out exactly what you can (and can’t) get away with – without losing the income. Even recently, (early 2012) after over fifteen years online I find myself with yet another Google ban for one of my sites. Luckily, the income generation techniques I use nowadays means the sites will still generate income – and this is one of the building blocks of making any site last.
Tip: At Feb 2013, Affiliate sales beat Google Adsense income hands down, every time.
To me, the ‘internet lifestyle’ means much more than just earning £££’s every day. It’s about being free and in control of your time. Sites based on just one technique will never safely allow a secure lifestyle and getting the type or mix right makes the difference between acquiring this lifestyle and having to carry on day in and day out and it took me over four years and a few restarts to get it right.
Unless you know someone ‘who already has’ to lead you by the hand until you start making money, the only way to make it is by doing it, and making all the mistakes along the way until you do get it right… which can take a long time if you don’t motivate yourself and persevere.
Nowadays, I like to spend my time visiting other countries, finding quiet corners of the globe to relax in and search for that special place to settle down — with a large glass of Chilean Chenin Blanc!
At the minute, France is the country of my hideaways. There are some lovely untapped areas allowing peace and quiet and time to think. Everybody should ‘think’ more. It’s how all the worlds great ideas have begun!
Unlike most marketers, I never use hype, never show Clickbank earnings snapshots or display anything to do with my incomes. What you see is exactly what you get – with no frills.
I’m not one for mindless chit chat, or for giving out personal details over the net. Those who know me, know my details. Those who don’t can get to know me on our journey onwards and upwards.
